Is an Idea a Real Thing?

What if?  What if an idea was believed to be a real, tangible thing? What if, your thought actually became something you could touch and hold.  What if? This may seem a bit off of the normal thinking, however let’s take a look at something that has inspired this post.

Recently, I went and saw the movie “The Social Network”. For those of you who may not know this was a story of how Facebook was conceived and brought to life. The very concept that was thought up by Mark Zuckerberg. The end result of this “idea”? How about having a site with 500 million registered users and having yourself worth in excess of $25 Billion dollars? Not bad. Now, let’s ask the question again…

Is an Idea a Real Thing?

Let’s go back to the movie theatre for a minute. At the end of the movie when it was displaying some of the stats for this amazing idea that literally changed the way we communicate, I could hear people literally gasping at the sheer, awe-inspiring numbers and dollar amounts. It really is a quite amazing story and the director portrayed it in such a way that helps to contemplate what is possible. The people may have also thought how lucky Zuckerberg was too.

Well, what does this have to do with internet marketing or business in general?  Well alot really. Here’s what I think the underlying message is to marketers like us. While most people see this movie, they may not realize a few things. For starters, this kid was a whiz-bang programmer with some major skills. Next thing, is that he sacrificed alot of things in his life, in order to make this thing work. Oh yeah and that is the last thing: He worked his butt off !

Yes, he worked hard. One of the most important key factors in running a successful enterprise.

So here is the question I pose to you: How many people would be willing to work as hard as he did and give up the many things, but with one caveat to that, they would be guaranteed to be successful. If you were told that you would be a success if you only did this and that, would you see things all the way through or would you get lazy or what if the work became too hard… would you still have the persistence to see it all the way through?

We run through ours lives without any guarantees on anything, but we still have to move forward and just keep trying. We have to remember to believe in ourselves and our ideas. It is the very thing that makes us unique and “real”. So is an idea real? You are. Just remember about the idea of a social website became a tangible billion dollars.

Go, believe, live.
